Why is it that I can’t use my Adoption papers for proof of citizenship in the United States?

I was born in Canada. I came right over, didnt stay but I think three months? I was Adopted here in Texas, lived in Texas my whole life and have adoption papers for here. My adoption papers work for every government agency except social security although when I was adopted given an social security number. Aggrivating isnt it????

The laws concerning adoption changed a few years ago. Now, if a US citizen adopts a foreign born child, the child immediately becomes a US citizen. But that change wasn’t backdated to include every child previously adopted. However, if you were adopted under Texas state law and no immigration papers were ever filed for you, you may have no current legal status here. If you had a green card, you would have no difficulty getting a social security number. You might want to consider consulting an immigration attorney.
