Private Shelter Adoptions?

On recent visits to my county animal shelter, I’ve noticed at least 2 people looking for certain dog breeds. I was told they run private shelters. When I explored adopting from private shelters, they wanted anywhere from $250 to as much as $500; sometimes more than $500! Also, before a person can adopt, you have to fill out an application, then they must inspect your home. After all of the red tape, you still may be rejected. My question is, is this some kind of hustle? I cannot imagine why a person will get a dog free, then charge such exorbitant “Adoption fees”. Do people do this to make money? The people I’ve seen look kind of shady. BTW, I chose to adopt directly from the county shelter.

I have never went through private adoptions, but I do know they cost more than the county shelters. There are reason’s for this though. The county shelters do get money to run from the government, and usually have a contract with whatever vet they use to get procedures done at a cheaper fixed rate. They also will not fix a lot of serious problems like broken bones, heart worm, or anything that would be really costly to the shelter. If a dog has a serious problem they just put it to sleep. They will just give shots, heart worm test, and fix the dogs. That is about all they will do medically.

The private rescues pay for all cost. They get no government help with their rescues. Which means they foot the bill for food and usually they use better food than the iams that county shelters use. They also will foot the bill for bigger medical expenses like broken bones, heart worm, heart disease, and lots of others diseases that at a county shelter would cause the animal to be put down. You can fix a broken bone or heart worm, and a dog can have a great healthy long life after that, but county shelter dogs do not get that chance, because the shelter is not allowed to shell out that kind of money on one dog. The private rescues also do not always have a vet that gives a fixed or discounted rate which means it cost more for the private shelter to get shots and neutering done also. The cost is more and directly out of the rescue operatiors pockets when you do private adoption, that is why they charge more. They have to try and recupe money on food, vet bills, and anything the dog may have needed, because it was straight out of pocket. They need to get the money back to put it towards the next rescue.

I do not think most private rescues are shady. They take on animals a county shelter would have put down, and they welcome the dogs into their home, not a 4 x 5 kennel.

They are usually breed specific allso, and it is usually a breed they love and feel a special connect too. They do home inspection and such to make sure the dog will have a good forever home. That way they will not have to re-home the dog again in a year or two.
