While We Wait: Spiritual & Practical Advice for Those Trying to Adopt

While We Wait: Spiritual & Practical Advice for Those Trying to Adopt

$12.95

“Waiting is the hardest part. This is the reality that Heidi Schlumpf has come to understand. The adoption process, which often comes after months of fertility issues, is itself a time- and money-consuming venture fraught with stressful paperwork and disappointment. It is nothing like the excited anticipation with which natural-birth parents await the arrival of their new child. With the average wait for adopting a child anywhere from one to three years, countless hopeful parents encounter feelings of helplessness, sadness, anger and frustration. To help them cope through the stress of the adoption process, Heidi Schlumpf, who finally adopted her first child with her husband Edmund after three years of waiting, offers While We Wait–a collection of reflections with words of commiseration, compassion and ultimately hope. Topics include: infertility, domestic vs. international adoption, the cost of adoption, waiting through the holidays, jealousy, marital stress, coping strategies, and spiritual resources.”

Learn from counselor and adoptive father Paul David Tripp how to help adopted children understand their identity and place in Gods world.”

The Unofficial Guide to Adopting a Child

The Unofficial Guide to Adopting a Child

$5.99

The process of adoption – be it an open or a closed adoption, domestic or international – is seldom simple, short, or standardized. It can often take many years of frustrating and expensive searching before parents can bring an infant or child home, and once they do, they face a whole new set of challenges as they learn together to be a family. The Unofficial Guide to Adopting a Child gives prospective adoptive parents the inside scoop on: How long it will really take to adopt, and how much it will cost; What the challenges are for single people, older couples, and gay lesbian couples seeking to adopt; What the all-important home study entails – from writing the autobiographical statement to creating a child-friendly atmosphere; What questions to ask agency personnel and birth parents – and what questions to refuse to answer.

A Coal Miner's Family at Mooseheart

A Coal Miner’s Family at Mooseheart

$10

A Coal Miner’s Family at Mooseheart describes the lives of Homer Rhodes’ widow and children at Mooseheart, IL, from 1919-1939. An orphan’s home-school, which still operates, Mooseheart is arguably one of the most unusual child care programs of the 20th Century. This story begins with my family’s arrival at Mooseheart and my rough introduction to the boys’ codes of behavior. I report on how a Demerit system was replaced by a Merit system that worked well for 1,300 students living in this community which absolutely prohibited corporal punishment. Also I explain our daily routines.Further sections illustrate how the Founder’s idealistic vision worked for our family and the students we knew: 1) how Blanche and her family adopt Earl and Carolyn Guinn, who lost both parents, 2) how students play and compete as the Mooseheart Spirit emerges, 3) how they can work to earn and spend their own money, 4) how they must learn a skilled trade, 5) how they may get a high school diploma –if they can pass the courses, 6) how they worship in the faith of their parents, 7) how they dance and romance, 8) how they dream, strive, become lonesome, suffer growing pains, 9) how they become ambitious, develop enough courage to leave Mooseheart to scatter and settle; 10) And finally, how they return to their very special utopia and wonder whether they can ever repay the Moose.Since this is a family memoir, I attach sections about our life before Mooseheart. I record what we know about our parents, Blanche Porter and, Homer Rhodes, and about Carrie Thomas, our mother’s birth mother. I attach also a section about Spruce Knob, WV, and the Elk Lick Coal Company when Homer Rhodes was Superintendent of the mine there from 1919 until he died in 1925.

A Guide to Russian Adoption: Professional Counseling and Personal Insights

A Guide to Russian Adoption: Professional Counseling and Personal Insights

$40

This practical book explains the process of adopting a child from Russia, from first contact with a Russian agency through bonding with the adopted child back at home. Karwowski provides a resource that parents can carry along as they navigate the paperwork, the home assessment, court hearings, medical exams, and financial components of what can otherwise seem like an overwhelming process. Herself the adoptive parent of two sons from Russia, the author also details common issues families face as they acclimate their new child to their home, family, and American culture. Aiming to break the process into manageable steps, Karwowski incorporates her own experience as a backdrop. Degreed in both psychology and sociology, she discusses sensitive issues regarding the child, which can include issues of abandonment, trust, and attachment. For all of these, she presents methods adoptive parents can use to see the signs and cope. She also addresses misconceptions commonly held about adoptions from Russia, the country to which she traveled four times across two years, to adopt her sons.

What do you do when you encounter a spirited little girl in a Russian orphanage and know in your heart that she is yours and you have to adopt her? Despite everything, Dee’s faith in God, support from her mother, and single-minded conviction that she had to bring her daughter home helped her stay on course. Letters from her daughter Alesia brightened the long, scary months of waiting. Finally, all the mountains had been moved, and a mother and daughter came home from Russia, a family at last.Â

 Angel Named Lucy

Angel Named Lucy

$14.18

When I was a child in New York my mother rescued a stray dog dodging cars in Manhattan. I grew up with that dog. We were inseparable. When she died in 1977 at age eighteen I could not contemplate “replacing her.” However, in 1990 someone called to say she’d found an abandoned dog following the mailman in the rain. She’d named her Lucy and asked if I’d like to adopt her. I said I’d be right over. Out came Lucy, acting like she’d known me forever. Lucy-who looks exactly like my childhood dog. Whose name was Lucky. My best friend returned. Lucy’s presence in my life is a gift from above. She is an incredible friend and teacher. She has shown me the meaning of unqualified love, and, since her blindness, perfect acceptance in the present moment. She has spoken volumes without uttering one word. She embodies simplicity, innocence and magic. Crawling home exhausted from a world full of woe, Lucy has brought tears of laughter, comfort and joy. To many a dog is “just a dog.” An object. It’s hard to fathom those who have not allowed themselves true communion with a pure, loving being. A higher life form, a dog. God spelled backwards. Dogs express what we are here to learn. These are poems and essays about beautiful Lucy, now sixteen, and some of her friends. Poems and essays about the joys and sorrows of life with my now elderly best friend; meditations on the anguish of physical decline, and on coming to terms with mortality.

Whether they were destined to Heaven or Hell, the cynical reaper had been forever responsible for the delivery of the deceased spirits. After spending all of eternity doing the same thing day in and day out with archangel Michael as his partner, Death was growing rather weary of his monotonous job. But when a chance encounter with the gifted child, Anya Smith, stirred up trouble in his routine, Death would soon find himself wishing for that comfortable monotony… Condemned by God to live a mortal life in order to see why good people had to die, Death must quickly learn to adjust to his newly borrowed body, once belonging to a homeless man by the name of Noah Quinn. Having no experience with human emotion much less mankind’s general fragility, Death must adopt Noah’s alias and dodge the advances of threats both physical and supernatural, all the while trying to keep Anya safe under his care. Betrayal, insanity, and pain both physical and mental are just the start of Noah’s experiences with the living. Life among people surely holds many lessons, but Noah will soon learn more about the living than he bargained for: namely that it was a hell of a lot easier being dead than alive.Candy Skulls provides a unique look into the mechanics of human emotion. Changes at the Intersection of Work And Family

$24

The largest social change in the last 50 years has been the increase in the number of women, especially mothers of young children, in the formal work force The May 2006 and June 2006 volumes of American Behavioral Scientist look at how this powerful transformation has impacted the venerable foundations of work and family, and reflect on the changes needed in organizational practices, social and public policy, families, and society in general to adapt to the changing 21st century workforce. Changes at the Intersection of Work and Family: Organizational and Worker Perspectives, Volume 1 (May 2006), edited by Diane F. Halpern and Heidi Riggio, focuses on organizational and worker perspectives. Many studies have shown that there is a substantial and practical return-on-investment for employers that adopt and commit to policies that help employees better manage the needs of both work and family, including fewer missed days of work, fewer come late or leave early days, reduced employee turnover, improved morale, and a better commitment to the employer. Volume 1 emphasizes topics such as the need for improved work-life policies, successful and promising public policy approaches, long-term work-life case studies from IBM, the dual-earner 60-hour work week, work-family and obesity and other health issues, the real and perceived negative consequences of taking advantage of family-friendly policies, the differences between male and female caregivers, and a whole-life approach to managing work and family. Changes at the Intersection of Work and Family: Family Perspectives, Volume 2 (June 2006), edited by Heidi Riggio and Diane F. Halpern, highlights family perspectives and issuessuch as working parents’ expanding need for child care, after-school care, elder care, and medical leave. Children's Perceptions of Violence

Children’s Perceptions of Violence

$116.99

This study examined children’s perceptions of the prevalence, incidence, and impact of violence experienced or witnessed by them and explored the factors that might mitigate and reduce its impact. A national survey of New Zealand children, aged 9 to 13 years, with a representative sample of 2,077 children from 28 randomly selected schools of various sizes, geographic areas and socioeconomic neighbourhoods was undertaken. Results showed high prevalence rates of both direct and indirect physical, emotional, and sexual violence. All types of violence involving adults were rated higher than violence involving children. The study also examined the ethical considerations and philosophy underpinning research that involves children. Guided by Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the results supported the controversial ethical decision to adopt a passive consent procedure. The study demonstrated children’s competence to express the ways in which violence has affected them. Conclusions are that effective development of policy and provision should be based on data that reflects children’s perceptions of the violence in the context of their own lives.

Communication surrounding the decision to adopt: Rationale and attributions.

Communication surrounding the decision to adopt: Rationale and attributions.

$49.99

The purpose of this study was to explore the communication surrounding the decision to adopt. The findings sought to address the notion that all (or a large majority) of adoptive parents decide to adopt because of a personal loss. Specifically, the study examines the discussion between adoptive parents and nonspousal family members as they reflect on the decision surrounding an adoption within the family. This study examined communication about the rationale for adoption through the lens of attribution theory. Through guided interviews with both adoptive parents and nonspousal family members, the author identified infertility/medical issues, faith/spiritual reasons, societal good, and previous adoption plans as primary rationale identified by parents and family members with only two cases where stories did not completely match within the same family. These rationales were then classified as external (e.g., infertility/medical issues) or internal (e.g., faith/spiritual reasons, societal good, and previous adoption plans) by applying the principle of attribution theory to the participants' descriptions of the rationale. Similarly, these rationales were classified by participants as consistent, distinctive, or based on consensus. The interviews showed that approximately half of parental and nonspousal family participants classified their rationale as consistent with past behaviors, while less than half classified their rationale as distinctive. Nearly all participants (both parents and nonspousal family members) classified their rationale as coinciding with what others would say is typical of them (consensus). Next, participants were asked to define family and explain how their adopted child fit into that definition. Nearly all participants mentioned that family was not necessarily a blood relationship, and was one based on love and care for another person; virtually all participants mentioned that the statuses of adopted children were no different than any other

“Eighty pounds a year!” My reader can imagine that this was no great fortune. I had little or nothing to spend in kid gloves or cigars; indeed, to speak plain, prosaic English, I went without a good dinner far oftener than I had one. Yet, withal, I was passing rich on eighty pounds a year. My father, Captain Trevelyan, a brave and deserving officer, died when I was a child. My mother, a meek, fragile invalid, never recovered his loss, but died some years after him, leaving me alone in the world with my sister Clare. When I was young I had great dreams of fame and glory. I was to be a brave soldier like my dear, dead father, or a great writer or a statesman. I dreamed of everything except falling into the common grooves of life – which was my fate in after years. My mother, believing in my dreams, contrived to send me to college – we both considered a college education the only preliminary to a golden future. How she managed it out of her slender means I cannot tell, but she kept me at college for three years. I was just trying to decide what profession to adopt, when a letter came summoning me suddenly home.

Excerpt: Anna Maria Helena (“Cosvelt” or Coswell), comtesse de Noailles (ca. 1826 1908) was an English noblewoman. De Noailles married Charles-Antonin, second son of Antoine-Claude-Just de Noailles, duc de Mouchy and prince-duc de Poix in Paris, 25 April 1849. The marriage was short-lived, and their only child died at birth the following year. She was known for opposing vaccination and vivisection, as well as financially supporting Elizabeth Blackwell during her struggle to become the first female doctor in the United States. De Noailles was a wealthy woman with houses in England, Paris, Montpellier and the French Riviera, which she moved between frequently. When she was 40, she saw a portrait of a young girl by the artist Ernest Hébert. De Noalles attempted to buy it but it had already been sold to Baron James de Rothschild. She therefore decided to adopt the model, named Maria. Her Italian father, Domenico, had brought her to Paris to be adopted for two bags of gold with which he would use to create a vineyard. de Noailles agreed to adopt her on the conditions that she was brought up a Catholic and that she would be treated as an equal, not a servant. De Noailles enforced a series of regulations on Maria and the rest of her family, including her second husband Philip and their two children, and threatened to cut off their inheritance if they did not comply. Amongst the regulations include the wearing of loose clothing. Maria

Does hope moderate the relationship between attachment and behavioral outcomes in foster children?

Does hope moderate the relationship between attachment and behavioral outcomes in foster children?

$49.99

Youth in foster care face a unique set of life experiences compared to children reared by their biological parents. Placement into foster care is often precipitated by parental abuse or neglect. Such insufficient, unresponsive, and unpredictable caregiving often leads to the development of an insecure style of attachment. These insecurely attached children adopt a belief of the world as unresponsive and unavailable, and of themselves as undeserving of love and proper care. Research has shown an insecure attachment style to be a risk factor for psychopathology, substance abuse, and deviant behavior. However, a sense of hopefulness has been documented as a powerful protective factor for at-risk individuals. The purpose of the present study was to explore the protective value of hope among an at-risk population of insecurely attached foster children. A sample consisting of 79 foster and non-foster adolescents (age 12-18) participated in this study. All participants completed the Children’s Hope Scale (CHS; Snyder, Harris, Anderson, Holleran, Irving, Sigmon, et al., 1991), the Adolescent Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ; West, Rose, Spreng, Sheldon-Keller, & Adam, 1998), and the Youth Self-Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist (YSR; Achenbach, 1991). Results indicated that compared to non-foster children, youth raised in foster care engage in significantly more problematic behaviors and are more insecure in their degree of attachment to their caregiver. Furthermore, attachment was found to partially mediate the relationship between one’s foster status and engagement in negative behaviors. Results reveal that a sense of hopefulness, does in fact serve as a protective factor for insecurely attached youth in foster care. Interventions targeted at fostering hope should be implemented to reduce the risk associated with being raised in foster care.

Excerpt: Abraham Darby (14 April 1678 8 March 1717) was the first, and most famous, of three generations with that name in an English Quaker family that played an important role in the Industrial Revolution. He developed a method of producing pig iron in a blast furnace fuelled by coke rather than charcoal. This was a major step forward in the production of iron as a raw material for the Industrial Revolution. Abraham Darby was the son of John Darby, a yeoman farmer and locksmith by trade, and his wife, Ann Baylies. He was born at Wrens Nest, Woodsetton, near Sedgley, Staffordshire, just across the county boundary from Dudley. He was descended from nobility, his great-grandmother Jane having been an illegitimate child of Edward Sutton, 5th Baron Dudley. Abraham’s great-grandmother was a sister of the whole blood to Dud Dudley, who claimed to smelted iron using coke as a fuel. Unfortunately, the iron that Dudley produced was not acceptable to the charcoal ironmasters. However, this may have inspired his great-grandnephew Darby to adopt perfect this novel method of smelting. Darby was apprenticed in Birmingham to Jonathan Freeth, a malt mill maker and fellow Quaker. Freeth encouraged Darby to be an active member in the Society of Friends, and he remained so all his life. In 1699, when he completed his apprenticeship, he married Mary Sergeant (1678-1718) and moved to Bristol, where he set himself up as a malt mill maker. There was a small community of Quakers in Bristol, and Darby soon gained a reputation for skill and enterprise. In 1702 Darby joined with a number of fellow Quakers to form the Bristol Brass… More:
