A national survey of New Zealand children, aged 9 to 13 years, with a representative sample of 2,077 children from 28 randomly selected schools of various sizes, geographic areas and socioeconomic neighbourhoods was undertaken. Results showed high prevalence rates of both direct and indirect physical, emotional, and sexual violence. All types of violence involving adults were rated higher than violence involving children. However, a sense of hopefulness has been documented as a powerful protective factor for at-risk individuals. The purpose of the present study was to explore the protective value of hope among an at-risk population of insecurely attached foster children. A sample consisting of 79 foster and non-foster adolescents (age 12-18) participated in this study. All participants completed the Children’s Hope Scale (CHS; Snyder, Harris, Anderson, Holleran, Irving, Sigmon, et al., 1991), the Adolescent Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ; West, Rose, Spreng, Sheldon-Keller, & Adam, 1998), and the Youth Self-Report Form of the Child Behavior Checklist (YSR; Achenbach, 1991). Results indicated that compared to non-foster children, youth raised in foster care engage in significantly more problematic behaviors and are more insecure in their degree of attachment to their caregiver. Furthermore, attachment was found to partially mediate the relationship between one’s foster status and engagement in negative behaviors. Results reveal that a sense of hopefulness, does in fact serve as a protective factor for insecurely attached youth in foster care.
