The Open Adoption Book: A Guide to Adoption Without Tears $13.95 “Updated for a New Paperback Edition, the Definitive Guide to Open Adoption, by the founder of the Open Adoption Movement The exploding popularity of open adoption today underscores what adopting parents, birthparents, and many adoption experts now maintain: Open adoption is the healthiest, most humane, and fastest method available. It’s better for the birthmother, because she (not lawyers or social workers) decides the future of her child. It’s better for children, because they’re raised without the shroud of secrecy and stigma that accompanies most closed adoptions. And it’s better for adopting parents, because it dramatically shortens the time it takes to obtain a baby, from an average of seven years to under one year. As director of one of the country’s leading open adoption agencies and founder of the first nationwide network of open adoption organizations, Bruce Rappaport has facilitated thousands of successful open adoptions and acquired an intimate understanding of the most common and heartfelt concerns of parents seeking to adopt a baby. Interweaving personal stories and real-life experiences of adopting parents, birthparents, and adopted children, he answers the questions clients most frequently ask:> * What is an open adoption? How does it differ from traditional adoption?> * Will I ever feel like a real parent if my child’s biological mother knows I’m raising her child? Will she interfere?> * What if the birthmother changes her mind after the adoption?> * How long will it take to get a child?> Documenting answers with extensive personal experience and research, Dr. Rappaport paints a reassuring yet realistic picture of the open adoption process. The result is a highly informative, deeply moving book that will help many people realize the greatest joy life can offer.” |

Adoption as a Ministry, Adoption as a Blessing $13.99 “”Abba, Father ” Of all the pictures the Lord uses to describe His relationship with believers, that of a loving father to adopted children is perhaps the most tender. As the body of Christ observes families who have lovingly welcomed adopted children into their midst, we gain a greater appreciation of our own adoption into the family of God. Exploring what Scripture says about adoption and the value of children, Michelle Gardner demonstrates that adoption can be God’s first choice for some lives. Weaving her own children’s heartwarming adoption stories throughout the book, Michelle presents a new challenge for believers to do something drastic for a child. Adoption as a Ministry, Adoption as a Blessing explores: – what the Bible says about ministering to children in need of families – how the church can minister to adoptive families – whether it is right to spend a great deal of money on one child’s adoption – whether domestic or international adoptions are more worthy – the blessings of adoption If you are touched by adoption in any way, this book will give you a new perspective on the Biblical significance of this unique relationship. Michelle Gardner, the Director of Kingdom Kids Adoption Ministries, is a graduate of Multnomah Bible College. She and her husband Steve were missionaries with CBInternational for several years. Steve is now Pastor to Children and Families at Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane, Washington. They have six children, three of whom are adopted.” |

Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches $15.99 “>A stirring call to Christian families and churches to be a people who care for orphans, not just in word, but in deed. >The gospel of Jesus Christ-the good news that through Jesus we have been adopted as sons and daughters into God’s family-means that Christians ought to be at the forefront of the adoption of orphans in North America and around the world. >Russell D. Moore does not shy away from this call in Adopted for Life, a popular-level, practical manifesto for Christians to adopt children and to help equip other Christian families to do the same. He shows that adoption is not just about couples who want children-or who want more children. It is about an entire culture within Christianity, a culture that sees adoption as part of the Great Commission mandate and as a sign of the gospel itself. >Moore, who adopted two boys from Russia and has spoken widely on the subject, writes for couples considering adoption, families who have adopted children, and pastors who wish to encourage adoption.” |

Wait No More: One Family’s Amazing Adoption Journey $13.99 “There are over 130 million orphans worldwide. The pro-life/pro-choice debate continues to consume politics and everyday conversations. Readers want to know what they can do to make a difference on these issues. “Wait No More” tells Kelly and John Rosati’s story of experiencing God more fully through the great blessings and challenges encountered during their journey to adopt four children from the U.S. foster care system. It is a story of God’s faithfulness to grow a beautiful family, through adoption, from the ashes of child abuse, neglect, and abandonment. The Rosatis strongly believe that God’s solution for orphaned children in the foster care system involves ordinary Christians desiring to live out an authentic pro-life commitment requiring action, not just words. Their story reveals how their beliefs challenged, enriched, and completely changed their family’s life.” |

This Means War: Equipping Christian Families for Fostercare or Adoption $14.99 “Fetal Alcohol effects… bonding attachment disorder… self-abusive… violent, destructive, aggressive… fire starter… _______________________________________________________________ Happy, successful, easy adoptions are a reality Many times the children are no more or less difficult to parent than average. However, sometimes raising adopted kids is extremely difficult. Are you really prepared to adopt? Read on as experienced foster, adoptive and even grandparents share stories of success, but also of struggles. Many entered adoption unprepared and were quickly overwhelmed. We wondered why our parenting methods failed. Why didn’t our love heal these children? Why were our previously happy families now falling apart? We lacked vital information about invisible disabilities; we didn’t know how profoundly neglect damages an infant. We didn’t realize we’d signed up to be missionaries to miniature heathens – nor that a spiritual enemy opposed us. Perhaps we assumed the natural state of man, apart from negative influence or defective genes, would be an ideal person; in the Garden of Eden… maybe. We’re not in the Garden anymore Before you adopt, pray for protection and guidance – and be sure you read This Means War This is what the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength…’ (Isaiah 30:15a NIV)” |

”Discoveries are not to be called conquests”: Narrative, empire, and the ambiguity of conquest in Spain’s American empire. $49.99 This dissertation focuses on the intellectual issues that surround the most dramatic form of human encounter: that of imperial conquest. By examining the modes of thought available to conquering societies I examine the way in which specific narrative traditions influence the process of justification and legitimization of expansion.;Based on my analysis of a specific set of narratives created by Spanish in the Americas, a wide variety of published primary resources, and research in Spanish archives, I look into the narrative traditions of a number of societies in history, assess the construction of the reconquista narrative in Spain, and then cross the Atlantic to examine variety of interest groups that emerged across Spain’s American empire and the narratives that were produced to justify those interests.;In successful cases the drama of conquest is normalized through the adoption or construction of legitimizing narratives that tap into prevailing societal self-conceptions or historical relationships. As examples of this I examine a diverse set of societies including China during the Han Dynasty, Sassanid Persia, Turkic states of central and western Asia, and the Ottoman Empire.;I then introduce the case of the Spanish, first in the Iberian Peninsula where their narrative traditions successfully justified and normalized the act of conquest, and then in the Americas. Spain’s American empire, I argue, constituted a situation so novel as to resist any attempt to make sense of it within the prevailing narrative tradition. Spain’s central narratives fell apart in the face of such novelty, leaving narrative chaos and an imperial state unable to control the process of narrative construction. The result was a proliferation of narratives and a heated debate over the Spanish right to rule in their American possessions. This debate only diminished with the repudiation of the notion of conquest in the second half of the sixteenth century.;Through this effort, this dissertation |

10 Steps to Repair American Democracy $12.95 Unresponsive government. Uninspiring candidates. Mindless political debate. Suspicious voting equipment. American representative democracy is suffering through its worst crisis in many years, and while many Americans recognize it, they just don’t know what to do about it. In A More Perfect Union, Steven Hill offers specific solutions for election reform. Arguing that much of what ails American politics is rooted in antiquated 18th-century practices, Hill makes a stirring call for national elections standards, nonpartisan election officials, an Election Day holiday, and other repairs to the nuts and bolts of the voting process. Further, he calls for the end of winner-take-all elections, adoption of proportional representation, reform of presidential elections, fairer representation in the U.S. Senate, universal voter registration, public financing of elections, and free air time for candidates. An inspiring blueprint for repairing and reinvigorating American politics, Hill’s simple yet effective proposals strengthen not just the electoral system, but the republic itself. |

A Dress for Anna $16.95 A Dress for Anna: The Redemption of the Life of a Ukrainian Orphan tells the fascinating story of how God led Deborah and Rob Amend to adopt a handicapped preschooler from an orphanage in Ukraine, and intricately knit her into their family. Beginning with the circumstances that opened their hearts to adoption, continuing through the entire process, and culminating with the difficult adjustments for Anna as she experiences life in a new culture, this book honestly shares the struggles, grief, and joy the Amend family faced as they followed God down the rocky path of international adoption. This powerful narrative not only provides readers with a clear understanding of the often challenging aspects of adoption, particularly for special needs children, it also offers inspiration by illustrating just how much an average, ordinary family can do when listening to God and following His call. |

A Guide to Russian Adoption: Professional Counseling and Personal Insights $40 This practical book explains the process of adopting a child from Russia, from first contact with a Russian agency through bonding with the adopted child back at home. Karwowski provides a resource that parents can carry along as they navigate the paperwork, the home assessment, court hearings, medical exams, and financial components of what can otherwise seem like an overwhelming process. Herself the adoptive parent of two sons from Russia, the author also details common issues families face as they acclimate their new child to their home, family, and American culture. Aiming to break the process into manageable steps, Karwowski incorporates her own experience as a backdrop. Degreed in both psychology and sociology, she discusses sensitive issues regarding the child, which can include issues of abandonment, trust, and attachment. For all of these, she presents methods adoptive parents can use to see the signs and cope. She also addresses misconceptions commonly held about adoptions from Russia, the country to which she traveled four times across two years, to adopt her sons. |

A comparative case study of human service organizations: How feminist organizations have developed, incorporated and maintained value-aligned practices. $49.99 Human Service Organizations (HSOs) are society’s principle means of providing social services, yet many do not have practices that reflect social work values. Some women’s organizations have successfully incorporated their values into their practices. This is a comparative case study of three feminist organizations that have successfully incorporated values such as empowerment, mutuality, the dignity and respect of the individual and social justice into their practices. These practices include trust, staff development, community integration, rule-breaking, ethical communication, a feminist hierarchical structure, programs based on victims’ experiences, everything for the victim, and a view of rape as a social problem. Descriptions of the organizations and these practices are included, as well the process of the development, adoption and maintenance of these value-aligned practices. Despite many differences in terms of structure, size, etc., all three organizations utilized a process of lens formation and narrative transmission in order to make decisions that implemented and maintained value-alignment. Lens formation is a process whereby various influences, such as the background of the executive director, organizational constrictions, existing organizational characteristics and social movements are used to create a lens through which decision makers filter information in order to make decisions. Each of these organizations also has a series of stories that they tell about their work. Analysis of the stories provided useful information about the organizational culture and practices. More importantly, the stories were used to transmit these values and value-aligned practices to others, including new staff, funding providers, clients, and the general public. This process of narrative transmission was the primary mechanism used by all three organizations to maintain their value-aligned practices. These findings are discussed and placed into a context of organizational |

A comparative study of confession law: The lesson for Thailand regarding the exclusionary rule and confession admissibility standard. $49.99 This comparative study of confession law and exclusionary rule of both common law countries and civil law countries indicates that Thailand adopted inappropriate tools to combat the threat of police misconduct in criminal cases. After the reform of the Thai criminal justice system in 1997, Thailand adopted international standards followed by the adoption of a strict exclusionary rule into the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) in 2004 which excluded the admissibility of a defendants’ confession made to the arresting police officer. This rule is applicable even if the defendant has been given a Miranda warning alike of his right to silence and his right to counsel. The reforms raise several new concerns in the Thai criminal justice process such as the possibility of higher crime rates, and a broader gap between the law in practice and the written law.;Based on this comparative study, a defendant’s confession is widely accepted as the high probative value evidence, and necessary for the administration of criminal justice systems throughout the world. As a result, a confession is always admissible proof of a defendant’s guilt, under the voluntariness doctrine when considered under the totality of circumstances standard. The empirical research also suggests that the personnel in the Thai criminal justice system do not agree with the strict exclusionary rule regarding confessions made to arresting officers and still use such confessions as if the law did not exist. This law is, then, ineffective in practice and its widespread violation may create more judicial disputes.;When all the undesirable implications and social costs of the exclusionary rule are considered, Thailand needs to study the actual causes of police misconduct and implement the right tools to enhance police performance, such as professional training, and reform of the police force in other dimensions. Finally, Thailand should adopt more flexible rules of evidence, and adopt the proposed model for confession |

A comparison of two early education literacy benchmark assessments. $49.99 The need for public education accountability and recent federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires effective assessment of all children to ensure adequate instruction. Assessment measures that attempt to provide this accountability vary greatly in terms of type of measure, required assessment time, and predictive relationship with end-of-year state assessment measures. The most prevalent assessment tool in Virginia is the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screener (PALS) which was developed by the University of Virginia to facilitate the Lady Intervention Reading Initiative, an initiative established to reduce the number of children with reading problems by early diagnosis and immediate intervention. PALS has an adoption rate by public school divisions in Virginia close to 100%. Another literacy screener is AIMSweb, developed by Edformation and currently owned by Pearson. It is used in progress monitoring in other states, and commonly used to facilitate Response to Intervention (RtI), a system-wide early identification and intervention process that attempts to provide research-based and alternate forms of instruction within the general education environment. This study compared these two operationally divergent universal screeners for early literacy. The first comparison determined whether AIMSweb identified the same population as at-risk that PALS identified as at-risk, This was a direct comparison of 2007-2008 fall benchmark results. Findings indicated that AIMSweb measures identified the same students that the PALS measures identified, and many component measures had highly significant correlations. This second comparison determined the sensitivity and specificity of PALS 1-3 in predicting the success or failure on the third grade Standards of Learning assessment (SOLA). Third grade fall and spring PAIS scores from 2006-2007 were compared to performance on the third grade 2000-2007 SOL |

A model for design of globalized instruction for healthcare interventions in developing countries. $108 The use of globalized design for international non-profit organizations allows multiple communities to access instruction without duplication of effort. The WHO distance learning materials project for improvement of Blood Safety in developing countries was used to document a globalized design process through interviews of the design team members and document review. The validity of the process was established from an electronic survey of country representatives of 94 countries from four global regions. Adoption of the materials, outcomes, user opinions of efficacy and fit with audiences were used to reflect the external validity of the model.;The results were used to modify processes used and to present the Emmanuel and Fordham Model for Globalized Design. The model is characterized by global, regional, local, and evaluation phases, embedded within surrounding contextual factors. The model includes an initiation phase, reliance on a design team with significant expertise and international representation, extensive formative evaluation from experts, implementation and dissemination processes cascading from a global to a local level, and contextual considerations. The graphical model has deliverables for each step to assist with project management and reporting to funding agencies.;The 49% adoption rate of the materials and the reported good to extremely good fit of the materials with varied audiences supports the use of the globalized model. Reported outcomes of the use of the materials were highly satisfactory for the primary objectives of the materials; to facilitate the use of non-remunerated blood donors and to improve standards of infection testing. There were no differences in development, educational, and healthcare indicators between the countries that reported complete satisfaction and those reporting less than complete satisfaction. The sub-components that did show differences matched the needs of the less developed countries more than those with higher |

AN INQUIRY FOCUSSING ON IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT OF ADOPTED INDIVIDUALS $62.99 Does the experience of adoption influence one’s overall sense of identity? This inquiry, constructed within an existential-phenomenological framework, views the intracacies of the adoption process by exploring the lived experiences of three adopted individuals. A substantial amount of research has indicated that the adoption experience has stressful components (Stein & Hoopes, 1985). Higher levels of behavioral problems in adopted adolescents have led researchers to speculate whether such problems may be due to issues regarding identity confusion (Grotevant, Dunbar, Kohler & Lash Esau, 2000). This research suggests that the adoption experience may complicate an individual’s identity development, but further research is needed. Researchers are cautioned not to directly attribute identity issues solely to the fact that an individual is adopted |

AU, NEPAD and the APRM: Democratisation Efforts Explored, Current African Issues 32 $10.95 The African Union (AU) and The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) reflect a hitherto unprecedented collective political effort by African governments to address issues of democracy and good governance on a continental scale. The visible commitments are reflected in the adoption of a variety of programmatic blueprints and a series of newly created or recently strengthened institutions. Most visibly since the integration of NEPAD into the AU, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) has started a process to address some of the obstacles on the basis of a voluntary assessment of African government policies. The contributions to this publication trace the recent developments from a policy perspective and explore the scope and limit of the current democratization efforts. They present an interim prognosis on the extent to which the visible new dynamics actually give realistic hope for achieving sustainable changes in terms of the declared goals. This publication is useful for political scientists, policymakers, and other professionals dealing with Africa in development assistance. |

Academic entrepreneurship in instructional technology. $49.99 Academic entrepreneurship refers to any of several types of entrepreneurial activities conducted by university faculty, students, or employees. The activities it typically describes, however, are either the commercialization of university research via patenting and licensing to existing firms, or new firm formation. Academic entrepreneurship has increased dramatically in the last several decades, particularly in disciplines such as biomedical engineering, computer science, and medicine.;Little is understood about academic entrepreneurship in education, however. Key questions include the identity of the entrepreneurs, what sort of products they are creating, the challenges they face, their motivation, their resource requirements, and the role of the university in the entrepreneurial process. This study sought to answer these questions by examining the experience of 5 academic entrepreneurs in instructional technology who had created new firms. Instructional technologies were defined as a product or service with an educational, instructional, or learning goal that used technology to achieve that goal.;Findings reveal that academic entrepreneurs in instructional technology tended to be male, both tenured and non-tenured, and active researchers, and they created a variety of types of products for different audiences. They were motivated by having a tangible impact on real-world issues. Although this study did not rigorously examine the personality characteristics of those profiled, the characteristics of proactiveness, entrepreneurial self-efficacy, and tolerance for ambiguity were most apparent among those interviewed. Time was the most critical resource for them, followed by human capital and money. This study found that they key challenges for these entrepreneurs were finding sufficient time to carry out the entrepreneurial endeavor; identifying an appropriate marketing, sales and distribution channel; the adoption of technology by customers and in some cases, the |

Accounting Change In Central Government $118.99 This Comparative International Accounting History study examines the adoption and institutionalization of double entry bookkeeping at the Royal Treasury, Portugal, and the subsequent diffusion of accounting technology to the Portuguese colonies, under the leadership of the Marquis of Pombal. The Royal Treasury was the first central government organization in Portugal to adopt double entry bookkeeping, a crucial first step in the institutionalisation of the technique within Country and Empire. The analysis of this accounting change is situated in the context of similar reforms in other European countries. The study identifies key pressures exerted over and by the Royal Treasury which resulted in the adoption of specific accounting practices and confirms that State actors are more likely to employ coercion in pursuing their ends. It provides further evidence the State as an important agent in the process of institutionalization of accounting practices. It highlights the importance of individual actors who, as powerful change agents, made key decisions that influenced the institutionalization of accounting practices. |

Accounting and Financial System Reform in Eastern Europe and Asia $123.23 Much has been written about the economic and political problems of countries that are in the process of changing from centrally planned systems to market systems. Most studies have focused on the economic, legal, political and sociological problems these economies have had to face during the transition period. However, not much has been written about the dramatic changes that have to be made to the accounting and financial system of a transition economy. This book was written to help fill that gap.Accounting and Financial System Reform in Eastern Europe and Asia is the second in a series to examine accounting and financial system reform in transition economies. The first book used Russia as a case study. The present volume in the series examines some additional aspects of the reform in Russia and also looks at the accounting and financial system reform efforts that are being made in Ukraine, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Armenia and five Central Asian republics. The series focuses on accounting reform, including the adoption and implementation of International Financial Reporting Standards; accounting education in both the universities and the private sector; accounting certification; corporate governance; and taxation and public finance. |

Adoption Of System Goods $51.21 The purpose of our work is to give an overview of the theoretical and empirical literature on direct and indirect network effects and to use the insights gained from this review to develop a model suitable for numerical simulation. This model would allow us to measure the impact of a number of environmental parameters on the adoption process, as well as to the possibility of negative impacts of standardisation, namely the possibility that a technological standard emerges, which later on in the process proves to be inferior, and that the development of the market might depend on stochastic results early on in the development of a market. Based on this review of literature, we develop our own model. Here, consumers belong either to the group of innovators, who do not care for network effects, or to the group of imitators, who take network effects into account. It will be supposed that the incumbent technology was the monopolist, which faces new competition from a competing technology, which has a lower value in direct utility, but a higher growth rate of technology so that it will eventually overtake the incumbent and become the new superior technology. |
