Agency Adoption

Single Parent Adoption: Daunting Yet Exciting   by Amie Haskett

For a single parent, adoption can be a daunting and harrowing business. When you get married you do not sign up for adoption because you believe that everything will work out between you and your partner and adoption is the farthest thing from your mind. Luckily, The Adoption Process is easier now than in the sixties and seventies when a single parent had virtually no chance of adopting a child. A single parent has a right to Adopt A Child, and a reason for adoption may be that she has strong nurturing instincts and wants the experience of motherhood, or for whatever other reason. It is her right. Of course, the single father wanting to adopt has the same rights. Still, there are hurdles to overcome. Following are five facts you should know about Single Parent Adoption.

The first thing you should know about adopting a child is that there are different laws for different states and that this can be mind boggling for both single parents and evaluators and adoption agencies to check your history and background. The history of the parties involved is important for the evaluation process.

It is wise during this process to consult an experienced adoption consultant who has knowledge Of Adoption laws in different states and who also knows the laws of the different adoption agencies. If you don’t have representation or help and make a wrong step, it is hard to fix afterwards.

Decide whether you want To Adopt A Child with special needs. If you have a job outside of the home, a child with special needs will require more attention. The evaluators will check and decide whether this is the best environment for the child. Children need looking after during the day, and while a neighbor or a babysitter can make sure the child has food to eat, there might be medication involved and you don’t want to leave this in the hands of a babysitter. As well, whether the child does or does not have special needs, the evaluators have to know that children are properly looked after.

The Home Study is an important document as it contains your history and previous environment for evaluators to see where you come from and what your work, home and family history is. A smart thing to do is to go online and download a copy of the Home Study so you can check beforehand what is necessary. On the same point, you may receive an unexpected home visit by an evaluator who wants to see how you normally live. The evaluator will look to see the general tidiness of the home, whether the home is suitable for a child, or even ask to see where the child will sleep and whether he has his own room.

If you want to adopt a child outside of the US, you will have to abide by international law. Make sure this is what you want as the process here is a long one as evaluators have to make trips to the country where the child presently resides.

Adoption as a Ministry, Adoption as a Blessing

Adoption as a Ministry, Adoption as a Blessing

$13.99

“”Abba, Father ” Of all the pictures the Lord uses to describe His relationship with believers, that of a loving father to adopted children is perhaps the most tender. As the body of Christ observes families who have lovingly welcomed adopted children into their midst, we gain a greater appreciation of our own adoption into the family of God. Exploring what Scripture says about adoption and the value of children, Michelle Gardner demonstrates that adoption can be God’s first choice for some lives. Weaving her own children’s heartwarming adoption stories throughout the book, Michelle presents a new challenge for believers to do something drastic for a child. Adoption as a Ministry, Adoption as a Blessing explores: – what the Bible says about ministering to children in need of families – how the church can minister to adoptive families – whether it is right to spend a great deal of money on one child’s adoption – whether domestic or international adoptions are more worthy – the blessings of adoption If you are touched by adoption in any way, this book will give you a new perspective on the Biblical significance of this unique relationship. Michelle Gardner, the Director of Kingdom Kids Adoption Ministries, is a graduate of Multnomah Bible College. She and her husband Steve were missionaries with CBInternational for several years. Steve is now Pastor to Children and Families at Fourth Memorial Church in Spokane, Washington. They have six children, three of whom are adopted.”

Adoption Is for a Lifetime

Adoption Is for a Lifetime

“Nancy was Canada’s first foreign adoptee. She shares her fascinating story of how God orchestrated her adoption from Hong Kong, blessed her with wonderful parents, a loving husband, and in His faithfulness and healing presence, brought them through every struggle, especially the loss of their first daughter, Rebecca Joy. Despite the grief, Nancy shares how God turned their pain into joy and sorrow into victory. From what may have seemed like a tragedy to most, Nancy and her husband, Paul, now see how God used this great trial to prepare their hearts for the adoption of Joylin (5), their first precious daughter and their second, Saralin (1). Take a journey with Nancy, as she testifies of the abiding presence of our heavenly Father’s heart for adoption. Nancy (Lai Kwan Chiu) was born in Hong Kong. At 3 years of age, she was adopted by Chinese parents and became Canada’s first foreign adoptee. She lived with her parents and adopted brother, Gerry, in Montreal until she was 13, after which her family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and eventually pursued a career in computer programming. Nancy, her husband, Paul, and adopted Chinese daughters, Joylin (5) and Sarlin (1) now live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she works as a computer programmer/systems analyst. She enjoys serving as head deacon at her local church and co-teaching an adult Sunday School class with Paul. Nancy’s greatest passion, however, is being a mother to Joylin and Saralin, her pride and joy.”

The Open Adoption Book: A Guide to Adoption Without Tears

The Open Adoption Book: A Guide to Adoption Without Tears

$13.95

“Updated for a New Paperback Edition, the Definitive Guide to Open Adoption, by the founder of the Open Adoption Movement The exploding popularity of open adoption today underscores what adopting parents, birthparents, and many adoption experts now maintain: Open adoption is the healthiest, most humane, and fastest method available. It’s better for the birthmother, because she (not lawyers or social workers) decides the future of her child. It’s better for children, because they’re raised without the shroud of secrecy and stigma that accompanies most closed adoptions. And it’s better for adopting parents, because it dramatically shortens the time it takes to obtain a baby, from an average of seven years to under one year. As director of one of the country’s leading open adoption agencies and founder of the first nationwide network of open adoption organizations, Bruce Rappaport has facilitated thousands of successful open adoptions and acquired an intimate understanding of the most common and heartfelt concerns of parents seeking to adopt a baby. Interweaving personal stories and real-life experiences of adopting parents, birthparents, and adopted children, he answers the questions clients most frequently ask:> * What is an open adoption? How does it differ from traditional adoption?> * Will I ever feel like a real parent if my child’s biological mother knows I’m raising her child? Will she interfere?> * What if the birthmother changes her mind after the adoption?> * How long will it take to get a child?> Documenting answers with extensive personal experience and research, Dr. Rappaport paints a reassuring yet realistic picture of the open adoption process. The result is a highly informative, deeply moving book that will help many people realize the greatest joy life can offer.”

“The softer side of the abortion debate … In contrast to the front line war of words that emanate with most protest views, Doris takes us behind the scenes into real life drama. The stories contained in this book will make you smile, cry, and find a place in your heart for hurting people that are usually blurred out of the media headlines. As a Pastor, I appreciate the caring way she approaches the issues and the caring hands that she reaches out with to touch hurting hearts. Pastor Rudy Bond New Life Worship Center, Tyler, Texas Doris has gathered a treasury of hope and joy surrounding the adoption process, including Scriptural encouragement and honesty about the fears and challenges involved. This book is a testament to the hand of God with even the least of these. Sara Maynard is a Texas attorney, specializing in representing children. She is Board Certified in Juvenile Law. ADOPTION JOYS, THEY EXPECTED A MIRACLE, explains God’s plan for unplanned pregnancies through moving testimonies of families who have experienced the joy of adoption. As the mother of two adopted children and one adopted grandson, I found myself rejoicing with the families through their stories. This book will be an effective tool to encourage couples to consider adopting children to complete their family. Birth parents will also understand the joy their baby will bring to the adoptive couple; and, perhaps, cause them to consider releasing their baby for adoption. God patterned adoption by adopting us into His family through His Son Jesus hrist. May this book challenge birth and adoptive parents to allow children to experience God’s unconditional love through the gift of adoption. Judith E. Shalllcross, Retired Christian School principal.”

Adopted for Life: The Priority of Adoption for Christian Families and Churches

$15.99

“>A stirring call to Christian families and churches to be a people who care for orphans, not just in word, but in deed. >The gospel of Jesus Christ-the good news that through Jesus we have been adopted as sons and daughters into God’s family-means that Christians ought to be at the forefront of the adoption of orphans in North America and around the world. >Russell D. Moore does not shy away from this call in Adopted for Life, a popular-level, practical manifesto for Christians to adopt children and to help equip other Christian families to do the same. He shows that adoption is not just about couples who want children-or who want more children. It is about an entire culture within Christianity, a culture that sees adoption as part of the Great Commission mandate and as a sign of the gospel itself. >Moore, who adopted two boys from Russia and has spoken widely on the subject, writes for couples considering adoption, families who have adopted children, and pastors who wish to encourage adoption.”

Family Matters: Secrecy and Disclosure in the History of Adoption

Family Matters: Secrecy and Disclosure in the History of Adoption

$25.5

Adoption is a hot topic–played out in the news and on TV talk shows, in advice columns and tell-all tales–but for the 25 million Americans who are members of the adoption triad of adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents, the true story of adoption has not been told until now. Family Matters cuts through the sealed records, changing policies, and conflicting agendas that have obscured the history of adoption in America and reveals how the practice and attitudes about it have evolved from colonial days to the present. Amid recent controversies over sealed adoption records and open adoption, it is ever more apparent that secrecy and disclosure are the defining issues in American adoptions–and these are also the central concerns of E. Wayne Carp’s book. Mining a vast range of sources (including for the first time confidential case records of a twentieth-century adoption agency), Carp makes a startling discovery: openness, not secrecy, has been the norm in adoption for most of our history; sealed records were a post-World War II aberration, resulting from the convergence of several unusual cultural, demographic, and social trends. Pursuing this idea, Family Matters offers surprising insights into various notions that have affected the course of adoption, among them Americans’ complex feelings about biological kinship versus socially constructed families; the stigma of adoption, used at times to promote both openness and secrecy; and, finally, suspect psychoanalytic concepts, such as genealogical bewilderment, and bogus medical terms, such as adopted child syndrome, that paint all parties to adoption as psychologically damaged. With an unswerving gaze andincisive analysis, Carp brings clarity to a subject often muddled by extreme emotions and competing agendas. His book is essential reading for adoptees and their adoptive and biological families, and for the countless others who follow their fortunes.

From the Publisher: The whole world changed with just one phone call…I met Stacie for the first time in May. Her voice was meek and flat on the phone. She wasn’t crying but I heard it, the unmistakable sound of desperation. That was the first call, the single call that would change my life, and hers too, probably forever. I work for a non-profit adoption agency in New Jersey. I fund their operation, provide outreach services, and they do the work. Finding families for kids who need them is beyond fulfilling, it is addictive. I like to help. I need to help. I help a lot, sometimes too much. This is a true story about a girl named Stacie who called the adoption agency with a terrible problem. A lot of it won’t make sense, at least logically. But sometimes sense runs deeper than logic. Nothing happens by chance. The events that follow, some dark and painful, changed me absolutely

Joyce Carol Oates’s fourth and most distinguished collection includes three flail-length plays, Bad Girls, Black Water, The Passion of Henry David Thoreau, and eight shorter pieces, which have been performed in various cities throughout the country.Bad Girls is the story of three teenage sisters who ruin the life of the man who comes between them and their single mother; Black Water is a dramatization of Oates’s widely acclaimed novel of that title; and The Passion of Henry David Thoreau is a portrayal of the turbulent life and premature death of Thoreau. The subjects of the shorter pieces range widely, from a serial murder to a nightmarish visit to an adoption agency. In plays ranging from the realistic to the surreal, Oates convincingly demonstrates her mastery of the form.

 Patrik Age 1.5

Patrik Age 1.5

$24.98

A married pair of ex-urbanites relocates to a small village in hopes of starting a family, only to receive an unexpected surprise thanks to a mix-up at the adoption agency. Sven and G? ran are finally set to realize their shared dream of becoming parents. In preparation, the happy couple even decides to leave city life behind in favor of moving to a quaint village in the country. Unfortunately, the local villagers don’t exactly extend a warm welcome to the optimistic couple; while some greet them with outright hostility, most are content simply to shun them. Upon receiving news that the adoption agency was unable to locate a suitable international baby, Sven and G? ran agree to take in a local orphan. On paper, Patrik was listed as being age 1.5, though upon meeting their new adopted child it quickly becomes apparent to Sven and G? ran that someone misplaced a decimal point. In reality, Patrik is a homophobic 15-year-old juvenile delinquent who’s none too happy about being taken in by a pair of aging gay men. Still, G? ran recognizes that Patrik needs a home, and agrees to put the openly hostile boy up until he and Sven can find a more suitable place for him to live. But former street punk Sven isn’t quite as accommodating due to the fact that he knows well what a young ruffian such as Patrik may be capable of. Over time, Sven’s trepidation about Patrik prompts him to confront not only his own misgivings about marriage and suburban living, but his long-buried feelings about his own estranged son from a previous marriage as well. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

 Penny Serenade

Penny Serenade

$4.99

While listening to a recording of “Penny Serenade,” Julie Gardiner Adams (Irene Dunne) begins reflecting on her past. She recalls her near-impulsive marriage to newspaper reporter Roger Adams (Cary Grant), which begins on a deliriously happy note but turns out to be fraught with tragedy. While honeymooning in Japan, Julie and Roger are trapped in the 1923 earthquake, which results in her miscarriage and subsequent incapability to bear children. Upon their return to America, Roger becomes editor of a small-town newspaper, just scraping by financially. Despite their depleted resources, Julie and Roger want desperately to adopt a child. It seems hopeless until kindly adoption agency head Miss Oliver (Beulah Bondi) helps smooth their path. Alas, their happiness is once more short-lived: their new daughter, Trina (Eva Lee Kuney), succumbs to a sudden illness at the age of six. Reduced to hopelessness, Julie and Roger decide to dissolve their marriage, but Miss Oliver once more comes to the rescue. Sentimental in the extreme, Penny Serenade is also enormously effective, balancing moments of heartbreaking pathos with uproarious laughter. Only director George Stevens could have handled a scene with a copiously weeping Cary Grant without inducing discomfort or embarrassment in the audience. Since lapsing into the public domain in 1968 (though released by Columbia, the film was owned by Stevens’ production firm), Penny Serenade has become almost as ubiquitous a cable-TV presence as It’s a Wonderful Life. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

 The Archaeology of Etruscan Society

The Archaeology of Etruscan Society

$105.4

The late sixth century was a period of considerable change in Etruria; this change is traditionally seen as the adoption of superior models from Greece. In a radical re-alignment of agency, this book examines a wide range of Etruscan material culture – mirrors, tombs, sanctuaries, houses and cities – in order to demonstrate the importance of local concerns in the formation of Etruscan material culture. Drawing on recent theoretical developments, the book emphasises the deliberate nature of the smallest of changes in material culture form, and develops the concept of surface as a unifying key to understanding the changes in the ways Etruscans represented themselves in life and death. This concept allows a uniquely holistic approach to the archaeology of Etruscan society and has the potential for other archaeological investigations. The book will interest all scholars and students of classical archaeology.

Mariana (Vanessa Bauche) has lived a life that began in chaos when her mother was killed in an accident before Mariana was born; the baby was saved, and then sold to a wealthy couple through a black-market adoption agency. As she grows to adulthood, Mariana finds herself often feuding with her adopted mother Dolores (Blanca Sanchez), who refuses to give her a share of the family’s estate. In time, Mariana becomes involved with Carlos Gallardo (Juan Claudio Retes) and pursues an increasingly decadent lifestyle with him until he falls to his death from a window during an argument. In a panic, Mariana runs away, finding solace with Sebastian (Osvaldo Benavides), a stable and spiritually oriented man who allows her to join him on a pilgrimage to the rain forest. As Sebastian follows his higher power, Mariana tries to find some closure regarding her troubled childhood by searching for her long-lost biological father. Produced by the same team that bankrolled the hit The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, this violent domestic thriller is often compared to that mega-hit. Screenwriter Wesley Strick made his directorial debut with this script by Michael Auerbach. Vincent Spano and Moira Kelly are Russell and Dana Clifton, a successful but childless yuppie couple who adopt a mesmerizing young girl named Janie (Julia Devin). Janie has suicidal tendencies, however — she walks out into crowded streets, keeps a butcher knife under her bed, and sometimes cuts herself. She also has psychotic white-trash parents, John and Leann Netherwood (Keith Carradine and Daryl Hannah). The Netherwoods are crooks forced to give up their daughter, but once released from jail, they are intent on getting her back. They kill an adoption agency worker and a police officer as part of their vendetta, terrorizing the suburban town as they target the Cliftons in their all-out war for the return of Janie. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

The often uncomfortable bonds of family intersect with the wary political and social allegiances of the Czech Republic following the collapse of the U.S.S.R. and the end of Soviet occupation in this drama from director Jan Hrebejk and screenwriter Petr Jarchovsky. Goran and Milan (Zdenek Suchy and Jan Budar) are criminals who, while ferrying a truckload of illegal aliens into the Czech Republic, discover that one of their cargo has misplaced a baby; looking to turn a profit wherever they can, they sell the lost child to Lubos and Eman (Marek Daniel and Pavel Liska), two petty thieves who run a black-market adoption agency. Among Lubos and Eman’s clients are Miluska and Frantisek (Natasa Burger and Jiri Machacek), a barren and lonely couple who are unable to adopt due to Frantisek’s criminal record, which amounts to a bout of drunken foolishness during a soccer game. Meanwhile, Martin Horecky (Petr Forman) is a Czech expatriate living in Australia who comes home for a visit following the death of his father, who abandoned the family before Martin was born. Circumstances prove not to be especially welcoming for Martin; his mother (Emilia Vasaryova), who has become poisoned with race hate, invites two guests for his homecoming dinner, a half-sister he’s never met (Kristyna Liska-Bokova) and her mother, who was once Martin’s girlfriend (Ingrid Timkova). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
